Gun Safety and You (or me rather)

I spent my Saturday afternoon at the local gun range doing some trap shooting. Everything was going great until near the end of the day when I, in the process of taking a second shot at one of the clay pigeons, accidentally let the shot gun slip slightly off of my shoulder.

Usually I would have taken the time to correct the position of the gun but being in a hurry to get the target before it came down I let the shot fly. Big mistake. I now have a baseball sized bruise on my bicep. It looks like I took a beating.

Take the time to correct the gun on your shoulder if it should slip, otherwise you could end up like me. I’ll post a picture of the damage as soon as I have a moment to do so.

Interview with Alex King on Basement.org

Definitely an interesting read about Alex King’s and Scott Sanders’ product, FeedLounge.

The interview has some good insights into when bootstrapping and organic growth are the right thing to do.

I personally wonder if this is the way I want to go with some things that I have been planning. If I can raise the capital myself without using outside investment then there is no reason to depend on others. I think the main problem I would face would be growth, and hardware costs, kind of like Alex mentioned in the interview. Hardware, while slowly going down in price, still isn’t “cheap” and that would be the main investment that I would have to make.

My dream job

I have been reflecting a lot on the last four years here in school. When I graduate in a month there are things that I will just miss being around. The skipping class to eat lunch with a bunch of friends, the “dates” every week to watch a TV show, and the ability to hop in my car and be five minutes away from seeing my friends.

All of these sentimental reflections have led me to think about what would truly be my dream job.

I want to travel the world, even to places no one really wants to go, like the most impoverished areas of Africa. I want to make some kind of difference in any way I can. The only jobs that I could think of that would allow me to do those things are journalist, Peace Corps worker, or a photographer.

I have never had formal photography training but I love it. If I could do one thing, it would be to take pictures all over the world of events that are affecting the area.

In a bar in Texas? Better be careful

Well, it has made national news, TABC is arresting people for being “drunk” in bars.

I usually would not have an issue with this but recently they seem to be crossing the line. There is a difference between arresting people who are a danger to themselves and others and arresting people who have only had a few drinks. Under current statutes TABC and police officers are allowed to make judgment calls when determining when someone is intoxicated. This means that though you may not be legally intoxicated (.08 BAC) the officers are within their jurisdiction to arrest you if

Flags of Our Fathers (film)

In February of 2004, I wrote about reading the book “Flags of Our Fathers” and the impact that it had on me.

From the looks of it, there will be a film based on the book. Directed by Clint Eastwood and having Barry Pepper as a lead character, gives me hope that this film will do the book justice.

Barry Pepper’s portrayal of “Jackson” in Saving Private Ryan was flawless and really pointed out the state of religion in our country at the time and how individual soldiers dealt with the carnage and death that they saw everyday.

I really do have high hopes for the movie and I don’t think it will let me down.

Inside Man

Today I watched “Inside Man“, a movie directed by Spike Lee. I cannot say much about the content of the movie without giving too much of the story away but I will say it is worth seeing.

If you enjoy a suspense driven story and a lot of good actors then this movie is definitely what you are looking for.

I will say that I figured out a big chunk of the story about halfway through, but that’s because of my knowledge of certain areas of history. Other than that the story was well thought out, fairly original, and interesting. The actors, especially Denzel Washington and Clive Owen (though you do not see much of his face), were fantastic. There is a lot of back story and motives that they leave to your imagination and of course there are little “easter eggs” thrown in throughout. It was a very enjoyable movie to sit through and I will probably watch it again when it comes out on DVD.
