You learn something new everyday…

Well I learned something about Google today. There is a technique called ‘Googlebombing’. Basically it is when a bunch of sites are linked to a specific site with a certain keyword. Fact and point, go to Google and search for ‘Miserable Failure’ and look where it takes you. You can also search for ‘Weapons of Mass Destruction’ and it gives some more goofy results. Anyway, just thougth that was interesting though I don’t like people complaining about the president. Grow up and realize that the world doesn’t revolve around you.

Also, I solidified my geekdom Saturday by watching ‘Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers’. I have to say that I was pretty impressed and captivated by the movie. Since I heard the third one is going to be mostly fighting, I think I am going to go see it, or maybe I’ll wait and just rent it.

just so everyone knows…

I hate school and I am ready for it to be over this semester, just so you all know. I have realized that the GPA system is there to mess up a student’s future as much as possible. If a student makes a 3.8 his freshman year and then makes A’s and B’s the next year, his gradepoint falls and it continues to fall. The reason being is that cumulative GPA is calculated using a system that hinders a student from being able to show his doing well. What the system does is show when a student does badly, but it does not allow the student to make up the gradepoints as easily as he lost them, which, in my opinion is wrong. If you get a 3.8 one semester and you do badly the next (let’s say you get a 2.5), your GPA falls to around 3.3. Now to make up the points you lost you would have to make straight A’s for the rest of college (that is if you have enough years to do that). It’s like hitting someone when they’re down.

looks like snow…

Well it looks like it may snow sometime next week (if not this weekend). My response to the thought of snow is, “bout time!”. The weather has been so screwy, not just here but everywhere, cold, then hot, then back to cold….

Well it looks like I’ll just take the Economics final just to see how I do on it. That kind of sucks because I was hoping not to take it but I did pretty bad on the test today (even though I studied for it).

Stats and why I hate it!

Just for the record, I hate statistics! I have a test in it today and it is going to be the death of me. It’s funny, this is the first math class in college that I have struggled with and I think the reason for that is the fact that I have no idea what the purpose is of what we are learning. The teacher doesn’t tell us what we are going to use any of this stuff for, she just gives us formulas and a few crappy examples. If she would go over how to use this stuff in real life examples or something I think it would help a lot… Oh, and the fact that people can barely understand her because her accent is so thick doesn’t help either. If I do badly in this class I am blaming it all on her. In fact, I think that if anyone does worse than they felt they should in this class, they should blame it on her!

Microsoft in the car market?!

I just read this on Wired News, Microsoft seems to want to jump into the car market and all I can say is “just great….”. This is the last thing we need is an OS in our cars that has a chance of failing. Computers are inherently insecure and are only as smart as the people who write their code so there is going to be breakdown in the software at some point, hopefully it isn’t at a critical moment while driving. I also like how none of the car companies are U.S. Rolleyes

Search Engine Optimization and the Future

Well I have decided that I am going to commit myself to learning everything I can about search engine optimization (SEO). I have already learned a lot but there is a lot more to go. My main focus is going to be the way Google acts and how PageRank works and how Google reacts to links within a page and outside links. I am learning a lot from Search-This.com and Website Publisher. Both sites are owned and operated by fellow posters at Sitepoint Forums.

So we lost

Well Texas Tech lost to OU yesterday… It was a dissappointing game as well as frustrating. With 5 turnovers, all leading to touchdowns, we basically shot ourselves in the foot. The thing that gets me about the turnovers is that sports commentators on TV act like OU’s defense was the reason these turnovers happened…. Got two words for ya, YEAH RIGHT! In that case, OSU, Missouri, and Colorado all have OU strength defenses because we threw the same amount of interceptions to them. Now, don’t get me wrong, Oklahoma’s defense is good and they have good pass coverage but to me, they aren’t the # 1 team in the nation. Personally, USC or even Michigan should have the # 1 spot. Just because OU hasn’t lost a game doesn’t mean squat, look at their schedule…. Not like it was a toughy.

Now let’s talk about Michigan for a little bit here. They basically handed it to Ohio State. Michigan has all around good team, they can pass, they can run, they can do it all. I would put my money on Michigan if they make it to the national championship against OU. I think it will be a big shock to OU to play a team that has a better offense than most Division I teams.

There isn’t always one way…

Plain and simple, there isn’t always just one way to do something and they way a person chooses isn’t always the best. So how do you know what method to choose? I have a few questions I ask before I sit down and starting writing code.

  1. What is fastest way to go about this?
  2. What is the best way to make this program run as fast possible?
  3. How will load balance be handled using each possibility
  4. How accessible is the program/site using each method?

I ask myself these questions so that I can better suit the end result to fit the problem more correctly. Even if something looks like it is done better a certain way, it usually isn’t the only good way to solve a problem.

I am hoping for a redesign of the site entirely during Thanksgiving break. I should have time to put the new database backend up and the new content management system up as well… Then, if everything goes according to plan there should be a new look as well. But who knows.

In other news, I still haven’t found my Accounting notebook that had all of my notes, class worksheets, and practice tests… Frustrating is the only word to describe it.
